The Avenue Multicultural Centre (AMC) was set up by Avenue St Andrew’s in 2008 in conjunction with the British Red Cross, City Life Education and Action for Refugees (CLEAR) and the Southampton and Winchester Visitors Group (SWVG).
AMC still offers a weekly drop-in centre for refugees, people seeking asylum and volunteers, now run by SWVG. Everyone is welcome and there’s no need to make an appointment. It’s a place to get advice, make new friends, spend time together, and feel welcome and valued. You’ll find:
·an opportunity to socialise;
·SWVG and CLEAR help desks for advice and support;
·refreshments;
·food bags for people seeking asylum to take away;
·activities including board games;
·one-to-one English lessons for those eligible;
·visitors from the Southampton Library Service usually on the second Friday of the month;
·a representative of the Medaille Trust, who support victims of modern slavery, usually on the last Friday of the month.
We look forward to seeing you there!

Roo Stewart, a United Reformed Church representative on the Joint Public Issues Team that looks after social justice issues for Baptists, Methodists, the Church of Scotland and the URC, came to visit AMC for Refugee Week in June 2019. Here are some of his thoughts about that experience.
